Do you know one of my favorite parts about diabetes?

INSURANCE COMPANIES! GOTTA LOVE THEM!!

Obviously I am being extremely sarcastic.

This morning, I had to run to my local CVS pharmacy before work to pick up my prescriptions. I confidentiality walked to the back of the CVS ready to pick up my order in the sorted amount of time I had allotted to pick them up and head off to work.

I have danced this dance many a time before...Last name....first name...

"Oh, I see Victoza isn't covered by your insurance" She sadly looked at me sadly... "It is now." I said "I got a letter last month saying it's covered now." The nice pharmacist clicking away at her computer stated... "I am sorry, it's not going through. I can call the insurance company and your doctor to see what's going on..."

(Because we all know that should only take a minute RIGHT....???)

"Ugh, no I have to go to work. Can you please call and I'll pick it up later." She agreed and now I sit and wait for a day when this doesn't happen.

It seems like if I were an insurance company, I would WANT people to take their medicines so that it would cost less for them in the end, (i.e. hospital stays).

APPARENTLY NOT. I am not sure why they don't have their stuff together, Here is a letter I got in the mail saying it WAS covered...

My life is constant trips to the pharmacy, dealing with insurance companies, calling medtronic, changing pump sites, testing blood sugars, counting carbs, needing more AAA batteries, the list just goes on and on.

All I want is to live my life and it would be nice if the insurance companies felt the same way. Maybe this was CVS' fault, but I HIGHLY doubt that. It's never as easy as get my medicine and go. You think I would learn by now....

I know I should be grateful that I have insurance, and I am, but they can be such a headache. In an earlier post, I mentioned how I had major problems getting my sensors for the CGM covered (when they had approved it once before...)

Will there ever be a time when I don't have to deal with them? Will there ever be a time I can gasp for air?

I'll keep you all updated.

You should call your insurance company and ask them if they have a mail order service. Generally, prescriptions are cheaper that way and the reps from my mail order are SO nice! It also means less time spent at the pharmacy and less hassle overall where you always have that thought niggling at the back of your mind "oh, shoot, I have to go to the pharmacy in the next few days..."

I hear you loud and clear. I have shed tears at my pharmacy more than once. My insurance changed and suddenly I'm charged $300 for test strips (which used to be free for me). It's a slap in the face when you pay so much for insurance, only to have to pay high prices at the pharmacy. Hope yours is covered and that it is affordable. Good luck!!!

oh lauren, don't even get me started on insurance companies! they are the bane of my existance! i pay for coverage at work, and then they tell me that things arent' covered but they were covered the last time. if diabetes doesn't cause depression, dealing with insurance companies sure does!!

how *cute* is your layout?? I love it! : ) Hope you got your Victoza. I know how hard insurance is. We still want a constant glucose monitor, but our insurance still refuses. We'll get there. Know there are others out there who understand! : ) Holly

  7. What a drag! It's so frustrating and time-consuming! Hope your Victoza gets approved with no more issues!

I'm with Kim, don't get me started about insurance companies. I feel your pain. I have to deal with my meds, my husband's and my 93 year old mom's stuff. I bet you could stop anyone on the street and ask them to tell you an insurance horror story and you'd get an ear full. It shouldn't be this hard to be healthy. Hang in there, Lauren. Alyssa's idea is a good one.

I've been there too...way too often. I hate the sudden changes.
The hardest part for me is knowing who to trust! Do I trust the first rep I talked to at the insurance company? The 2nd one? The 3rd one? What about the pharmacist? Or how about the paperwork from the beginning of the year? Or the Explanation of Benefits? Or maybe the bill from the doctor's office (Ha!)?
It's all exhausting...and I've been doing this for a while (definitely not new to this fight/frustrations).
