After last week's Yoga Nightmare, I was NOT going to let that happen again!

5:30pm Blood sugar = 100

Hmm...too low for class, so I knew from last class, I will drop 100 points throughout the 1.5 hour class. I am no mathematician, but those numbers don't add up!

I drank some apple juice and I thought hmm let's double it up JUST in case.

What a difference!!! Class was so much better and I felt so much stronger. Tested after class and 230. GRRRR

I just can't win with diabetes!!!

Let's talk stress.

We all know that stress affects blood sugar levels. Which to me is annoying since I didn't even get to eat anything and my blood sugar goes up. FANTASTIC.

Obviously yoga helps with me stress, but what are other ways I can de-stress? Are there any secrets for lowering blood sugars when they are up due to stress (besides insulin LOL)

Doesn't it seem like there really is no way to deal with stress until after whatever you are stressing about it done?

I.E. a bubble bath, yoga, shopping...

Usually if you are in a stressful situation (I.E. deadline at work, traffic, etc.) you can't just hop into the tub.

How can I tell diabetes to go away when I'm stressed out??

For now, I will think of these places...but for some reason, I don't think those numbers are going to budge still...

Stress? What's stress? Hmmm, must be one of those imaginary words that don't really exist, like sleep.

Seriously, though, I find that with stress, the best way to go about dealing with it is to deal with whatever the cause of the stress is. Obviously, if it's an impending work deadline, this doesn't help so much. My best answer would then be to either tear up some paper, throw a few things, or do some deep breathing. For the work environment, I'd suggest deep breathing. Otherwise, take all of your old vials of insulin and a good wall!

Also, there's no way to lower blood sugar levels without insulin or exercise. With stress, the only thing you can do is correct for the high and then de-stress.

Stress is a big one for me.... I have a bad habit of letting my body stress out easily, especially at work. I would think meditating would help (this is what I say, but then I don't do it!). Deep breaths. Maybe go for a short walk? Breaks are good. :)

  3. I once took a stress management class. Here are some of the tricks I learned.

Breathe deeply. Seriously. It works. Big, deep, long breaths that you hold for a second or two before exhaling.

Positive imagery. Take a moment or two and imagine being in your "happy, relaxing place" -- a beach, sailing, floating in the pool, getting a massage, reading a book in a big comfy chair.

Tense your muscles and then release them. Start with your hands. Clench your fists and hold them there. Then release. Tense your arm muscles, hold, release. Tense your abdominal muscles, hold, release. Etc, etc. If you're in traffic, grip the steering wheel, hold and release (without letting go of the wheel, obviously).

    Hope this helps!

Your comment about stress sending BG high without the pleasure of eating something really got me. It's so true! It's the same with illness and the weather. Stinks, huh?!

You're so right! I find exactly the same thing. Funnily enough, I've got a post in pending about stress and nerves before my exams. Great minds, huh? :) I hope things start to get better at yoga! There's nothing worse than the D trying to ruin something you love most. P.S I liked the image of the cat - looks like a punk rocker! :)

I agree-the faster you get through the thing that is stressing you, the faster you feel better. Having to get something done for one of the kids (teachers, parties, church function, school, house, etc!! no ending..) is stressful, but as soon as I am finished..already better. In the middle? I eat chocolate. That won't help. Maybe raise your temp basal if you know it'll be a stressful day (or even two hours?). Take Heidi's advice!! : ) (and I would picture me in the beach scene you have up there!!) aaahhhhh.... ; )
