Do you ever feel like you just can't give yourself enough insulin?

I do not know what's going on!! For the past week, I have increased my average insulin intake by 20 units a day! That's huge! It seem like I am constantly high, until I OVER bolus then I have scary scary lows.

I am not sick and I changed the site and tried new insulin...WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE??

Things haven't been AS normal as usual...

I had a very hectic schedule recently with family in town.

With that comes AMAZING memories. This past weekend I went on my first hot air balloon ride. It was really scary at take off and landing but other then that, AMAZING!! It's interesting though, I was thinking while I was up there, what if something happened to me? What if I went so low that I needed to go to a hospital? Would the hot air balloon fly right to a hospital? Oh how diabetes likes to interrupt every part of your life...

Everything ended up great, and the trip was something I will never forget.

I had a similor issue while I was staying down in the US, I was in Colorado for two weeks and during the entire time I wasn't able to get my numbers below 216, when I am very much use to being around 144 or less day in and day out. I would take 20 units of humalog and it would gover the meal but it wouldn't get be under 216, no matter what. My endro said it was elevation that my body wasn't adapting to the stress it was under for the prolonged period of time (I had the same issue when I lived there for 6 months) as a result I know that living at higher elevations or high stress can be a big issue for keeping my levels down.

That is so cool!!! The hot air balloon.

You know...Joe has weird periods of massive insulin dose increases and then within a week or two he is bottoming out like crazy and we are back to our "normal" settings. Good luck. I hope the highs resolve soon.

  4. What an amazing experience and awesome pictures!! Hope you fix the insulin issue soon! We have many of them living in the land of puberty and have experienced them when on vacation as well. Hang in there!!

That balloon ride looks awesome! And yes, it always scares me a little when I need more insulin than usual because I'm not sure how long that will last. I find that I need more insulin when things are hectic and I'm stressed or right before (and during) my period--I guess that has to do with hormones? Also, if I don't keep up with exercising, my body seems to need more insulin since I'm not getting that activity.

WOW.. GORGEOUS! what a treat to see.
Regarding your insulin usage, have you considered the heat? it does weird things to some people. Last summer I was beyond high for what felt like 2 straight months.

    Stunning pics!!!

Maybe the elevated sugars are from stress? Even when I'm anxious or excited about things, my sugars tend to rise. Hope they get back to normal soon!

Gosh, we've also had to increase Mary Claire's basal and bolus ratios the past three days, maybe it's the moon! ; )

LOVE those balloon pictures-especially your shadow!! : ) Hugs, and hope it gets better!

Wow, Lauren! Your hot air balloon ride looks absolutely incredible. I'm glad you had a great time :)

Diabetes can be so difficult to predict! There are so many factors that can make my bg levels go crazy and out of control regardless of the amount of insulin I give myself (illness, temperature, nerves, excitement etc.)

I hope that your levels sort themselves out soon! :)

OH WOW!!!! That's AWESOME!!!! We see tons of balloons in the Spring here, and I always wonder if I'd be brave enough to try it.
